Nintendo plans to launch the Switch 2 with a new 3D Mario game, developed using Unreal Engine 4. Reports suggest that in its second year, the console will receive a new Mario Kart title, tentatively called “Mario Kart X,” which is believed to be Nintendo’s most expensive game to date. Additionally, leaks indicate that the Switch 2 will debut with “Mario Kart 9” and a port of “Red Dead Redemption 2.” Some reports also claim that “Final Fantasy 7 Remake” runs comparably to its PlayStation 5 version on the Switch 2. A leaker known as Nash Weedle suggests that the “Bayonetta Trilogy” is heading to the Switch 2, featuring enhanced visuals, performance, and HDR support. During a behind-closed-doors session at Gamescom 2023, Nintendo reportedly showcased a new version of “Breath of the Wild” to demonstrate the Switch 2’s capabilities, though it’s unclear if this version will be publicly released. We can anticipate major first-party titles, such as a new Zelda game, to arrive on the Switch 2. Meanwhile, upcoming releases for the current Switch include “Metroid Prime 4.”

Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 will be backward compatible, allowing players to enjoy their existing Switch game library on the new console. Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa stated that “Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch.” However, it’s not yet clear whether this backward compatibility will extend to both physical game cartridges and digital downloads. Additionally, the original Switch Online games will be available on the Switch 2. Questions remain about the compatibility of current accessories, such as Joy-Cons and other peripherals, with the new system.

As of now, Nintendo has not announced an official release date for the Switch 2. Some reports suggest that the console may launch in early 2025, with an announcement possibly coming later this year. Given the current Switch’s aging hardware and slowing sales, a 2025 release for the Switch 2 seems plausible. We anticipate more information to emerge in the coming months.
